CFPS Restricted Data Application Guidelines
About Restricted Data
In order to maximize the protection of interviewee privacy, CFPS implements a hierarchical data sharing scheme. For questionnaire data that does not involve the privacy of respondents, we will place it in the CFPS public use data. Users can register and apply on the CFPS data platform, and download the data to their local computers for research use. All identifiable information such as the respondent's name, address below the provincial level, work unit, etc., is deleted from the public use data.
Although the measures to mask relevant information can ensure the security of respondents' data, they may pose certain challenges for academic research. To meet the research needs of scholars while protecting respondent information, CFPS has specifically provided a method to apply for restricted data. After registering as users of the CFPS data platform, researchers can apply for the use of the following three types of restricted data as needed.
How to Apply
The review period for a restricted data application is three weeks. If there is a holiday, it may be extended. Please arrange your time accordingly.
County-level socioeconomic variables for CFPS2010
DOES NOT contain specific city and county names, but contains about 10 socioeconomic variables at the county level and county pseudo-codes that can be linked with the CFPS public data. This data service is currently free of charge. Once your application is approved, you can download the data online. For detailed information, login to our Chinese website or send us an email.
Data Enclave at Peking University
Contains specific city and county names and some other variables that are not in the public dataset. Users must visit the Data Enclave room at Peking University to use this service. No remote access is provided. Due to the limited availability of resources for data enclave service, users are advised to use the CFPS public data resources mentioned above if possible.
If you must use the data enclave, send us an email inquiry or visit the Chinese website for more information.
Other Restricted Data
Applicable to restricted data other than the above two categories. This data service is free of charge. After the application is approved, users can download data online. For detailed information, login to our Chinese website or send us an email.
To ensure the security of CFPS data, no user is permitted to explore names, cities, counties, towns, or villages based on CFPS public or restricted data. Published papers must not include information related to any location below the provincial level (including data points on maps). Users of CFPS public or restricted data must comply with our data regulations. Violators of this policy will have their data usage privileges revoked. Publications based on improper data use may be retracted.
